6 Ways to Care For Your Undereye Skin

Did you know that the skin around our eyes is the thinnest skin in the body? It is for this reason that the eye area is often the first pace that shows signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, hollowness, skin laxity, and bags. Think of the eye skin like tissue paper. It is extremely thin and delicate. How do you keep tissue paper looking smooth? You treat it extremely gently! The same applies to our peri-orbital skin. As our skin naturally loses collagen with age, the eye area needs to be treated very carefully and gently to keep it looking youthful.

The undereyes are one of the most tricky areas to treat in the clinic! Eye treatments are highly individualized. What works for one person, may not be the best choice for another. We highly recommend having a consultation with a certified cosmetic injector, doctor, or nurse to assess your individual needs.

How to keep your undereye skin looking youthful:

 1.     Focus on prevention. The best and most important key to protecting your undereye skin is by preventing damage to the skin. What does this mean? Invest in an eye cream with a little bit of retinol (make sure it is specifically for the eyes; we don’t want to use a regular retinol close to the eyes as it is too harsh). Use it daily, religiously, before the aging signs start to show if possible. Wear SPF daily to prevent damage to the skin caused by UV rays. Don’t rub your eyes and pull on the skin. Sleep on a silk pillowcase. Get enough sleep and have a healthy lifestyle. Lifestyle factors are the backbones of prevention that will have a massive impact on your skin around the eyes.

2.     Focus on collagen induction therapies. Collagen induction therapy, also known as microneedling, creates thousands or even millions of tiny wounds in the skin. The body responds by producing collagen in the treated area in the weeks following the treatment. Microneedling is a gentle and effective way to reduce fine lines and skin laxity around the eyes. 3.     Take it a step up by adding radiofrequency. Radiofrequency microneedling is extremely effective for the eye area. Radiofrequency energy creates a shrinkwrapping effect on the skin and is great for tightening the undereye area. Morpheus8 for the eyes has been a massive success at our clinic. How to prevent undereye wrinkles:

4.     Invest in growth factors. Growth factors have been extensively researched and proven on their efficacy for creating new skin cells. This means they are effective at tightening and firming aging skin. We love Vivier’s Grenzcine line as these products also contain Vitamin C, so they are effective in brightening the skin and fighting off free radicals that cause aging. Grenzcine serum (AKA liquid gold) and Grenzcine eye are two amazing choices. Grenzcine Eye Cream

5.     Try the jelly roll injection. The jelly roll refers to the puffy roll that forms for some people when they smile. In this treatment, Botox, Dysport, or another brand of neuromodulator is injected right below the eye. This area becomes paralyzed, so the jelly roll can’t form when smiling, and undereye wrinkles will be reduced. Not everyone is a candidate for this injection, but when conditions are right, it works beautifully!

6.     Try undereye filler. Filler placed in the tear troughs is very effective in reducing the hollow and dark appearance that some of us have under our eyes. Again, not everyone is a candidate for this injection, but results are phenomenal when the conditions are right.

Most importantly, remember that physical signs of aging are a sign of a life well lived. Those lines represent all of the laughing, crying, and memories we have experienced over the course of our lives.  If we had zero lines or wrinkles as we get older, it wouldn’t look natural!
